Dane County developed its model ordinance by researching codes approved in cities like Columbus, Ohio, and Austin, Texas, says county planner Steve Steinhoff. Elements of these codes were combined into an ordinance and refined by a multimunicipal task force called the Smart Codes Working Group. Dane County soon plans to follow up that effort with a publication called Great Neighborhoods: How to Bring Them Home, which will be available on their website later this fall.
