“I believe in New Urbanism,” Sanford says

“I believe in New Urbanism,” South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford said after listening to Andres Duany present a proposal for creating the “Bull Street Neighborhood,” a mixed-use development on a 178-acre state hospital campus in downtown Columbia. The State reported May 24 that Duany recommended 771,000 square feet of offices, 60,000 square feet of retail, and 1,178 residential units, including townhouses, condos, apartments, single-family houses, cottages, and live-work units. Duany noted that the mix could change through negotiations with a master developer who would buy the site. The development is expected to appeal to empty nesters, young professionals, medical workers, and researchers, including those at the University of South Carolina’s new research campus.
