Grand Concourse frontage

Grand Concourse near 167th in the Bronx. Grand Concourse, one of NYC's few multiway boulevards, is lined for four miles by (mostly) six-story apartment blocks, many (but hardly all) built after the IND subway arrived in 1933 and featuring jagged Art Deco edges with banded windows wrapping around the corners. Interestingly, the six-story limit came from fire code, not from the old five-story walkup principle; most of the buildings have elevators. One of America's few streetscapes with the mid-rise scale common in Paris, Berlin, and other fin-de-siecle European capitals.

What a humane scale for buildings! Too bad it's not currently a protected historic district -- hence the awful cornice replacement at right.
