Description:

The Congress for the New Urbanism is a Chicago-based non-profit organization with 3,000 members worldwide. Our mission is to advocate for the restructuring of public policy and development practices to support the restoration of existing urban centers and towns within coherent metropolitan regions, promote the reconfiguration of sprawling suburbs into communities of real neighborhoods and diverse districts, conserve the natural environment, and preserve our built legacy.

CNU is presently seeking fall interns for a variety of tasks. Internships at CNU are an ideal training opportunity for individuals with an interest in and broad knowledge of urban planning, architecture, design, real estate, public relations, and/or journalism. Responsibilities will vary depending on the intern’s interests, abilities, and availability, but will primarily focus on communications, public and media relations, event organization, and research.

Responsibilities may include any number of the following tasks:
•  Editing and producing content for web and print
•  Maintaining the CNU.org web site
•  Developing our database of media contacts
•  Gathering project information on New Urban projects for an on-line database
•  Following news coverage of New Urbanism
• Developing educational materials and presentations
•  Assisting with short-term research projects and responding to research requests

Qualifications:

Applicants should have some experience with research and editing and excellent communication skills; be detail-oriented, organized, and responsible; and be proficient with Mac OS X, ideally with experience with FileMaker, Dreamweaver, and design applications.

The preferred candidate is well organized and will commit 10-20 hours (approximately two workdays) per week, daytime or early evening. Positions are generally unpaid, but class credit or work/study can be arranged; a stipend can be arranged following an initial evaluation period. We do not offer relocation assistance.

To apply, please email the following:
• a cover letter describing applicant’s goal and interest
• a resume
• two references (academic or work-related)
• your availability (dates and times of day you are available)
• two short (one to two page) journalistic writing samples: e.g., newspaper articles, letters to the editor, blog posts, anything persuasive in tone. Class assignments are usually too formal, but an excerpt from one may be acceptable.
