How to Create a CNU Initiative

What is an Initiative?
Initiatives are long term projects created and driven by the interests and passions of CNU members - they are where members can work to reform standards. Many initiatives are described further in the strategic plan, but members can create initiatives at any time. Once organized as Task Forces, initiatives now function on an individual level and are lead by a chair or co-chairs. Chairs and co-chairs are responsible for moving projects forward by setting up meetings, working with staff to produce documents/publications, that advance the project.

How to Create an Initiative?
Each Initiative should draft an "Action Plan" that includes a clear statement of purpose, desired outcome, description of how the Initiatives advance the Charter and a process describing how the outcome will be achieved. A chair or co-chairs should be identified in the plan. This should be summarized in a 1-2 page document that is reviewed by CNU staff and the Board. CNU members are encouraged to submit ideas for potential initiatives by downloading a proposal form which can be filled out and sent to Heather Smith at hsmith@cnu.org

New Initiatives Forum
At CNU XV in Philadelphia, attendees participated in a new initiatives forum in which they voiced ideas for the future of New Urbanism. The forum bridged the gap between discipline, experience, and age - providing a truly unique venue to exchange and present initiatives. Using Open Space Technology,an efficient, hands-on method of creating and discussing agendas (lead by Jennifer Hurley of Hurley-Franks & Associates), participants produced many stimulating initiatives including one on Light Imprint New Urbanism.
