Launched in partnership with the University of Miami School of Architecture in 2008, the CNU-Accreditation program is based on the principles of the Charter of the New Urbanism. The aim of the program is to spread and elevate our best practices; recognize the talent and commitment on display within the movement to create walkable, sustainable places; and establish New Urbanism as the standard for leaders working to build better places.

CNU-Accreditation is achieved through the successful completion of the CNU-A online exam. Accredited CNU Members demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of, and commitment to, the theory and practice of New Urbanism. Individuals who meet the requirements for Accreditation will be recognized as a “CNU-Accredited Professional” member.

Benefits of Accreditation

  • Provides a marketable credential to employers and clients
  • CNU-Accredited professional certificate
  • Listing on CNU.org public member directory as “CNU-Accredited”

Requirements of Accreditation

  • Pass the CNU-Accreditation exam
  • Upon passing the CNU-A exam, maintain an active annual CNU-Accredited Professional Membership.
  • Complete a minimum of eight (8) hours of CNU-approved continuing education per year.

Updates to the CNU Accreditation Program

CNU is in the process of updating both the CNU-A Exam and the optional CNU-A Preparatory Course. The new CNU-A Exam will be available in late Spring and the Course will be ready in Summer 2026.

If you would like to be notified directly as soon as 2026 dates are determined and registration for the Exam or the Course opens, please opt-in for CNU-A Exam and Prep Course News through CNU Online.

A CNU Online profile doesn’t require a membership. If you don’t already have a CNU Online account, you can create one here.
