LEED-ND Required in 2012 Choice Neighborhoods Planning Grants
In late February, the the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development announced their FY2012 Choice Neighborhoods Planning Grants program. Nearly $5 million dollars are available to support comprehensive neighborhood revitalization plans focused on three core goals: housing, people and neighborhoods. As part of their grant requirements, HUD requires that all grantees secure Stage 1 Conditional Approval for LEED-Neighborhood Development as part of their neighborhood revitalization plan.
Choice Neighborhoods builds on the successes of the public housing transformation under HOPE VI. The Choice Neighborhood model provides support for the preservation and rehabilitation of public and HUD-assisted housing, within the context of a broader approach to concentrated poverty. New Urbanists led the shift from isolated public housing towers to connected, pedestrian-oriented communities. Requiring LEED-ND as a part of these grants further evolves the federal and local commitment to walkable and sustainable community planning.
