Wall Street Journal on VMT, Energy, Sprawl

Wall Street Journal transportation columnist Joseph White just wrote an interesting piece on Vehicle Miles Traveled in America. Numbers show that VMT is growing at a much faster pace than population. This is do of course to suburbanization and lack of connectivity in the suburbs. White also condemns the common notion that increased fuel efficiency will solve our energy problems. It's encouraging to hear a mainstream news source tackle the interrelated issues of energy consumption, transit, and sprawl in a hollistic and critical manner.

White Cites Growing Cooler Report

White references "Growing Cooler: The Evidence on Urban Development and Climate Change," published by the Urban Land Institute, which points out that even though cars will be more fuel-efficient by 2030, the growth in miles traveled could mean that carbon dioxide emissions could grow by 41%.
