Operating under the Livability Solutions moniker, the partnership offers free technical assistance to communities looking to implement sustainable planning solutions, courtesy of a grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency.
Livability Solutions is a coalition which includes CNU, Project for Public Spaces, Center for Neighborhood Technology, Reconnecting America, the Walkable and Livable Communities Institute, National Center for Biking & Walking, The Local Government Commission, The National Charrette Institute, Paul Dreher of the Newport City Renaissance Corporation, the Surface Transportation Policy Project, and Leigh Lane of the Center for Transportation and the Environment at NC State University.
As part of its participation, CNU will be training communities on the CNU/ITE Designing Walkable Urban Thoroughfares Manual. CNU will lead a workshop in Blue Springs, MO and play a part in workshops in Philadelphia, PA.
CNU developed the Designing Walkable Urban Thoroughfares manual as a recommended practice with ITE to foster awareness in engineering education for a holistic approach to designing multi-modal roadways that add safety and value to communities. “There is not enough guidance for how to design according to the context,” CNU Board Member Norman Garrick, said of the manual released in 2010. By focusing on auto, bike, transit and pedestrian traffic, demand for training on the manual has been overwhelming. In addition to manual trainings as part of CNU 19 and the upcoming CNU 20, communities from Elgin, IL to El Paso, TX have all turned to the CNU/ITE manual for guidance.
“This grant enables CNU to do customized trainings to give communities the Right Fix they need to use the street for three purposes: commerce, economics and movement, instead of just focusing on movement,” said CNU CEO & President John Norquist.
CNU will issue an RFP for trainings on the Designing Walkable Urban Thoroughfares shortly. Check back at www.cnu.org for more details. For questions about this project please contact Heather Smith at hsmith {at} cnu.org
